The Property Brothers Reveal the Single Best Upgrade To Fend Off Nosy Guests

It isn’t every day property brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott get to work with a fellow designer who has her own furniture line, so they’re doubly excited to meet model, designer, and entrepreneur Cindy Crawford on the latest “Celebrity IOU.”
In the episode “Cindy Crawford’s Super Remodel,” the Scott brothers drive to Woodland Hills in L.A. to help Crawford’s longtime personal trainer spruce up her very first house before she and her family move in.
“Sara and her husband have had a rough go of it,” explains Drew. “Her husband got cancer, and they were never able to buy a house because all the extra funds they had were going toward medical bills. So they scraped enough together, they found a great house, but they did not have enough money to renovate. So enter Cindy…”
Crawford wants to make sure the home is completely renovated and perfect before Sara moves in, and is ready to roll up her sleeves and help out in a big way. And it turns out she knows a thing or two about decor. So this time, we get decoration tips from Crawford as well as Jonathan and Drew. Take a look at the latest round of celeb-approved design tips that may be worth trying on your own abode, too.
Dark floors must go

The house is empty when they see it for the first time, but they immediately notice the dark, wood-look floors have dust and scratches and make the place look smaller.
“New, medium-toned hardwood floors starting right from the moment you walk in will add sleek style and warm sophistication,” says Jonathan.
When they’re selecting materials, Crawford says, “I’m not going to choose something dark that’s going to show every dog hair. That’s going to drive her crazy. It needs to look beautiful, but it needs to be practical.”
A powder room keeps guests out of your own private loo

There’s an odd brick planter in the entryway, and everyone agrees that it should be replaced by a powder room.
“With that old brick planter removed in the hallway, we can add a super chic and convenient bathroom for family and friends,” says Jonathan.
After all, who wants house guests traipsing through your own private bathroom, where they could (and let’s face it, often do) peek inside your medicine cabinet? Problem solved if you have an easily accessible powder room on the first floor.
Arches can elevate a space

Crawford is excited about the prospect of building arches throughout the house.
“Cindy’s idea of an archway is going to elevate the entire space, and adding one next to the entry allows us to up the design ante with a wood feature on the ceiling,” says Drew. “Echoing the design’s sophistication with three more archways in the family room will offer sleek cohesion throughout.”
Then they decide to add one more arch, to the pantry entry. They even find an arched, salvaged door that fits perfectly.
“The arches add the perfect architectural element to our house, and to see those arches reflected in the entry and the kitchen as well, I think it ties that whole space together really nicely,” concludes Crawford.
Jonathan describes them as “sexy new curves.”
Add a floor on the ceiling

While the new wood floors look amazing, Drew also wants to add wood flooring on the ceiling.
“In the entry, we wanted this wood ceiling to make a big impression, so we decided to go with a dramatic herringbone pattern,” he says.
“This is our version of the Sistine Chapel,” Jonathan quips as he strategically places planks on the ceiling.
“Having this dark ceiling makes it rich,” observes Crawford.
Paint window frames black for a whole new look

“We love reusing what we can so it doesn’t end up in a landfill,” says Jonathan. “The back doors and window are in great shape, but to maximize the function and flow in this space, swapping them is a must.”
So he reuses the doors and windows, flip-flopping them in position on the wall and painting the frames black so they appear modern and fresh.
“It makes the flow of the room much better. It’s like you want to be part of the action,” says Crawford.

Do the property brothers deliver?
“Cindy, I can’t believe you did this. I really am truly grateful,” says Sara when she sees the results of the renovation. “I feel like we won the lottery. It’s going to change the life of my family on a daily basis. Thank you for your loyalty and this gift, which is immeasurable.”
Also immeasurable is Drew and Jonathan’s enthusiasm when they see that Crawford has baked a carrot cake to celebrate the project’s success.
Sara proclaims they must each do five burpees before they get a piece, so they enthusiastically hit the floor. They’ve definitely earned a sugar rush!
