Curb appeal is the visual attractiveness of a house from the street. It's the first impression your property makes, whether to potential buyers or just visitors. A small investment of time and money in your home's exterior can significantly increase its value and appeal.

Focus Areas for Improvement

Improving curb appeal can be broken down into three main areas: the yard and landscaping, the home's exterior, and the entrance.

1. Landscaping and Yard Maintenance

A tidy, well-maintained yard is foundational to good curb appeal. Focus on basic maintenance and strategic planting.

  • Lawn Care: Ensure the lawn is neatly mowed, edged, and watered. Address any bare spots.
  • Weeding and Pruning: Remove weeds from flowerbeds and walkways. Prune any overgrown trees and shrubs that may be obscuring the house or walkways.
  • Mulch: Apply fresh mulch to garden beds. This provides a clean, finished look and helps retain moisture.
  • Define Walkways: Use pavers, stones, or simple edging to clearly define the path from the street or driveway to the entrance.
2. Home Exterior Upkeep

The structure of the home itself should look clean and well-maintained.

Task

Detail

Siding and Paint

Power-wash the siding to remove dirt, mildew, and grime. If the paint is peeling or faded, consider a fresh coat in a modern color.

Roof and Gutters

Clean out gutters and ensure downspouts are properly draining. Replace any broken or missing roof shingles.

Windows

Clean all exterior windows until they sparkle. Ensure window frames and sills are free of dirt and peeling paint.

Lighting

Replace old, outdated exterior lights. Ensure all bulbs are working, especially near the entrance and driveway.

3. The Grand Entrance

The front door is the focal point of your home's exterior. Making it inviting is key.

  • Front Door: A freshly painted or stained door can make a dramatic difference. Choose a color that complements the home's exterior.
  • Hardware: Update the doorknob, lock, and knocker. Polished or new hardware adds a touch of elegance.
  • Door Mat: Use a clean, stylish welcome mat.
  • Potted Plants: Flank the front door with symmetrical planters containing vibrant flowers or lush greenery.
  • House Numbers: Ensure house numbers are modern, visible, and well-lit.
  • Mailbox: If the mailbox is visible, ensure it is in good repair and matches the home's style.
