The house in Santa Fe, NM, that actor Larry Hagman once owned is pending sale after a month on the market. It was listed for $3,995,000.
Hagman, who famously played J.R. Ewing on the long-running TV series “Dallas,” died 10 years ago. But some of his personal touches remain in the home.
The green powder room looks just like the star designed it.

“We call that the Hollywood bathroom with J.R.’s hat in it,” says listing agent Ashley Margetson, with Sotheby’s International Realty–Santa Fe–Main Downtown Brokerage. “It’s the guest powder room, so everybody gets to see that bathroom and it’s so fun. The whole top half of that bathroom all the way around is mirrored.”
Margetson says the hat belonged to Hagman.

The home dates to 1952, when author Peggy Pond Church built an adobe house on a large piece of property near the historic district of Santa Fe.
Hagman and his wife, Maj Axelsson, bought the property in 1995.
“They kind of built around [the original] house and added on to it,” Margetson says. Hagman added a great room with doors for indoor-outdoor living, a main bedroom surrounding a courtyard, and a kitchen.
Hagman had starring roles in the 1960s sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie” and the 1980s prime-time drama “Dallas.” He died in 2012. He was 81.
Artistic additions
The current owners, artist Gordon Skalleberg, and his wife, Andrea, have split their time between this home and his native Sweden for several years.
Skalleberg’s artistic touches are all over the house, including hand-painted cabinets in the kitchen and the bathroom.

The couple built a 1,220-square-foot guesthouse on the property, which is also Skalleberg’s art studio.
“It has fabulous views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains and beautiful finishes,” Margetson says. “It is the coolest studio in Santa Fe. The ceilings are really high, the light is great.”
The main house is 4,000 square feet with three bedrooms, a chef’s kitchen, and Santa Fe touches like kiva fireplaces, plastered walls, and wooden doors and beams.
The house is on an acre lot, which is just a block away from the famed Canyon Road and the historic district, Margetson notes. But a long, tumbled brick driveway gives it a feeling of privacy.
“It’s surrounded by trees, and it has the best of both worlds. You feel like you’ve gone far away. You can feel all alone there, but you’re close to everything,” Margetson adds.
