Former big leaguer Ryan Klesko is selling four bungalows on his private island in Florida’s panhandle region. The former slugger owns the island with an anonymous business partner.
Black’s Island, as it’s known, is on the Gulf Coast and was discovered by Captain James Black nearly 200 years ago. The island is said to have a storied pirate history.
Today, the seven-acre island near Port St. Joe, FL, is accessible only by a short boat or helicopter ride. It features 26 cozy bungalows along the waters of Saint Joseph Bay.
Amenities for island residents include a clubhouse, cabana, and spa-style pool. There will soon be on-island dining and access to the Mainland Black’s Hotel, which will be completed in late 2023.

A cedar boardwalk that connects the bungalows lends a Tahitian vibe to the entire area. Right now, four bungalows are available for ownership, and the others are slated to hit the market later this year.
“The property offers an incredible getaway,” Klesko says. “There are rabbits and turkeys and peacocks. You can go fishing, kayaking, paddle surfing, stand-up paddle boarding; and it’s all just a five-minute boat ride to the mainland. This area of Florida was once considered the ‘forgotten coast,’ but there is a lot of value still there.”
So what type of buyer does the former first baseman hope to attract to his island getaway?
“A lot of people who come to rent here are from the Panama City Beach or Destin area, looking to just get away,” he says. “You can just hook up your boat and escape with your family. It’s a place you can easily get away to but still has that small-town feel. You could live there year-round, if you wanted to. It’s just a pretty cool environment.”

The 26 bungalows feature two floor plans known as the Cay and the Atoll.
The Cay offers a two-bedroom, two-bath layout with 1,225 square feet of living space on a single level. The Atoll features three bedrooms and 2.5 baths with 1,425 square feet of two-level living space.
A two-bedroom bungalow is on the market for $1.5 million, while a larger three-bedroom bungalow is available for $1.6 million.
Each home is surrounded by windows and features a private deck with spectacular views. The open floor plans boast cozy kitchens, bright dining areas, spacious living rooms, and primary bedrooms with high ceilings.
Klesko, 51, starred in the big leagues for more than a decade. He was a first baseman for the great Atlanta Braves teams of the late 1990s and won a World Series with the 1995 team. He also earned an All Star nod in 2001, while playing with the San Diego Padres.
