An eclectic Pittsburgh home has landed on the market again, and its wild design has already caused quite the social-media buzz.
At first glance, the 1,475-square-foot brick home looks like an average abode. But the trippy interior tells a different tale.
“When you walk in the front door, it seems like it’s a ranch-style house; but the previous owner cut the floor out to lower it to the basement level, so it’s all open,” says listing agent Chads Mullinary, of Berkshire Hathaway The Preferred Realty.
Mullinary explains that all of the unique changes were made by the home’s previous owner, and that the current owners loved the quirky spaceship theme.
“They are relocating, or they would have stayed here,” Mullinary notes.

In addition to the now-open floor plan, the home’s unique design features a dining room that resembles the command center of a spaceship—with a pocket door that leads to the galley kitchen.

“The spaceship dining room was designed from a lot of parts the previous owner had from an Apache helicopter,” Mullinary says. “He was going through a point in his life, where creating this unique design was sort of an escape.”
Listed for an affordable $199,000, the three-bedroom house was built in 1969.
A sunken living room features a built-in cabinet, high oak beams, hardwood floors, and a brick fireplace. A spiral staircase provides easy access to both levels of the home. To the left of the fireplace, a wooden ladder leads to an elevated library.

The main-floor living area also showcases a floor-to-ceiling, space-themed mural.
The current owner, who purchased the home in 2020 for $152,500, has made some modifications—fresh paint and flooring, plus a new roof.
The backyard features an above-ground pool that needs a new liner and some other updates. And with a little TLC, this space could be transformed into a private oasis.

The homeowners have made a few tweaks here and there, over the past few years. While they were on board with the home’s outer-space vibe, they apparently felt differently about its tropical-themed rooms.
“The bedroom was originally designed as a cabana, filled with sand,” Mullinary says. “The current owners took the sand out but kept the cabana-style bed. There was also a bathroom—that had a jungle-theme—that is now a more traditional style.”
So, who would want a pad with an out-of-this-world design? As it happens, themed homes make for popular short-term rentals.
“It’s such a unique home,” Mullinary observes. “It would make an awesome Airbnb; or it could go to a young couple, investor, or the right family who just loves the style.”
He adds that the locale, in a mellow Pittsburgh suburb, is also an appealing perk.
“The Holiday Park neighborhood is located in Plum, which is in the eastern suburbs,” Mullinary says. “It’s a sought-after neighborhood to live in … so it would make a great family home.”
