Through the ‘Looking Glass’: This Sleek Vermont Loft Is a $689K Dream

Looking Good: Peek Inside Vermont's Modern, 'Looking Glass' Loft

A modern, one-bedroom loft in Barnard, VT, just hit the market for $689,000.

Known as The Looking Glass, the 1,405-square-foot home was built in 2002 and last purchased in June 2022 for $450,000. The owners have made some improvements to bump up the loft’s value to its $490-per-square-foot asking price.

“The Looking Glass is a metal-and-glass, industrial structure that has a fun, eclectic feel to it,” says listing agent Cheryl Herrmann, of Re/Max Group One.

Rental real estate

The place is currently used as a vacation rental, the listing notes. And according to Herrmann, the loft has proven popular with its guests—it remains frequently booked.

“It’s hard for us to even show it, but the guests who have stayed there have all been very happy, based on the reviews,” she says.

Herrmann says that some of the home’s best features are its “open space, great light, beautiful view, and radiant heat in the floors.”

Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room offer breathtaking views of the Green Mountains, while the 10-acre property affords plenty of privacy. The gorgeous home sits just four miles from Silver Lake State Park and 12 miles to nearby Woodstock, VT.

“It really has a wonderful feel to it,” Herrmann says. “The renovations have been done in the last four or five months. They took a wall out and opened up the bathroom, making it into one large bathroom with a soaking tub.”

Along with the newly refreshed bath, other standout details include exposed beams in the living area, concrete floors, soaring ceilings, a playful chair swing, and a spiral staircase that leads to the upstairs loft bedroom.

Plants included

The home is being sold fully furnished and includes houseplants; custom, high-end furniture; and local art, according to the listing.

‘Perfect getaway’

“A lot of people who have been coming to see the property are from California and Boston,” Herrmann says. “They are wanting to use it as a second home, starting with a rental to offset costs. Some people are getting closer to retirement, so they would like to use it as a vacation home and rent it in between.”

Herrmann anticipates a buyer who appreciates the loft’s aesthetic and its serene, natural location.

“The person who buys it will certainly love the uniqueness of the home, the view, and the private lot,” she predicts. “It’s a very peaceful setting and a very eclectic home. If you are coming from a city, where you have to deal with a lot of traffic, this is the perfect getaway. There is a lot of open space. … It’s hard to find a special home, but this one has it all.”
