Take a Chance on Cheese: Washington Creamery and Farm Available for $5.9M

If your next life chapter includes making some serious cheese, the owners of Samish Bay Cheese have the perfect opportunity for you.

This certified-organic creamery in Bow, WA, includes a cow herd, a retail shop, a contract with an organic-milk supplier, plus cheese-making equipment. And it can all be yours for $5.9 million.

Owners Roger and Suzanne Wechsler are retiring but will stay on to help a new owner get started, says listing agent Kristal Grimstead, of Compass Bellingham.

Samish Bay’s current portfolio includes 12 fresh cheeses and five aged varieties, along with whole-milk and Greek yogurt offerings. Folks drawn to the inner workings of curds and whey can reap what the Wechslers have already built.

“They’re looking to hand it over to someone who’s also passionate about the food industry and cheesemaking,” says Grimstead. “It’s turnkey. Everything is included.”

Twenty-three years ago, the Wechslers bought the 54-acre property 75 miles north of Seattle. They’re the second owners to operate Samish Bay Cheese, which debuted three years earlier.

They’ve expanded the operation over the years. A 3,000-square-foot production facility was added in 2016, and a 900-square-foot retail shop was erected the following year. The business could be further expanded.

“There is potential for the [milk supplier] to supply 50% more milk to Samish Bay, should the buyer want to increase production,” says Grimstead.

There’s also potential for rental or retail income with the 2,344-square-foot farmhouse on the property. The four-bedroom residence comes with an attached one-bedroom apartment.

The farmhouse could “be used as a cafe or an Airbnb,” Grimstead adds.

The property includes a 33,000-square-foot pole barn with a milking parlor, office, and walk-in freezer. And there’s an additional 5,120-square-foot barn with solar panels.

“Bow is a very desirable area for agritourism,” says Grimstead, noting that the creamery sits squarely on the popular Bow-Edison Food Trail. “A lot of people in the Seattle area come up for the day and eat their way through (the region). People are very environmentally conscious in this area.”

The region also offers proximity to Seattle and Vancouver, a mild climate, and easy access to ski destinations.

Samish Bay Cheese products can be found at grocery stores throughout the Pacific Northwest. Its spreadable vache cheese won a Good Food Award in 2021.
