A midcentury modern house that has been in the same family since it was built in 1960 has hit the market for the first time.
“My husband was born and raised here,” says listing agent and owner Kelli Weis, with Daniel Ravenel Sotheby’s International Realty. “It’s a steel and glass house, and [there is] a thoughtfulness behind every room and every design feature.”
This showstopper in Savannah, GA, is listed for $1.5 million. The home needed just five days on the market to land in contingent sale status.

Weis’ in-laws helped design the 3,640-square-foot house with architect Mark Hampton, who was part of the Sarasota School of Architecture. He designed several homes during the 1950s and 1960s. This house caught notice in the June 19, 1960 edition of The New York Times, as one of Architectural Record’s 20 best-designed homes of 1960.
Weis and her family moved into the home and began a series of renovations after her father-in-law passed away.
“We’ve done a lot of updates over the last four years to get it where it maintains its architectural integrity but also has features and benefits that people look for these days,” Weis explains.
The family’s renovations include bathroom upgrades, an expanded kitchen with added windows, and new flooring.
Shoji screens provide privacy on the two-story glass walls.
“We just sort of updated the look of the house, while still maintaining the original feel with all the walnut wood, and gave it a fresh new feel,” Weis says.

The light fixture in the main entryway is not original but looks like it could be.
“It’s the centerpiece of that two-story living area,” Weis says. “I call it a starburst, because it kind of reminds me of a star hanging from the ceiling, and it makes me very happy. You can see it throughout the living spaces of the house.”
She explains that the family tried to select pieces that aligned with the home’s era and architecture—decor that “would possibly have been there.”
The home has four bedrooms, 3.5 baths, and a “floating living area,” as Weis calls it
“It doesn’t have any walls and has a railing around the area and is literally held up by welds of steel,” she says, adding that it’s her favorite area of the home. “It has such a great view of the rest of the house. You also have a view of the pool and the golf course, and the natural light that comes in is just spectacular. It’s just a calm, happy place to sit and have a good conversation with somebody.”

The elder Weis family members were in the movie business, and the home once had a film screening area. Some of its features remain today.
“Back in the day, the owners of movie theaters would get the big reels to preview the movie before they decided if they were going to show it in their theaters,” Weis explains.
The area where the reels were once kept is now an infrared sauna. The room’s original doors remain.
As for why the family is selling the property, Weis says it’s just time.
“My husband has wanted to sell it for a few years—he says he was born here, he doesn’t want to die here,” she laughs. “We’ve done all we can do to this house, and I think it’s ready for the next chapter—to find an owner that’s going to continue to be a steward of the integrity of the house and take it to its next phase.”
