Outer-space orbs? “Flintstones” home? Hobbit house?
The otherworldly Bonita Domes in Joshua Tree, CA, seem to pop out of the desert landscape.
The compound with a large adobe dome and several smaller domes, totaling 1,339 square feet of living space, sits on almost 2 acres.
“I thought it was the most unique property I’ve ever seen. Literally, I’ve never seen anything like it,” says listing agent James Bianco, with Coldwell Banker Realty. “The first thing that came to mind was Star Wars Land from Disney or some extraterrestrial place.”
Some viewers on social media say it looks a bit like the “Flintstones” house, Yabba dabba dome!
“Everyone has their viewpoint of what it looks like,” Bianco says with a laugh.
The list price is $2,119,999.
“It’s currently a vacation rental, and I don’t think it’s utilized to its fullest potential. There’s lots of room for growth and opportunity there,” Bianco says.
The short-term listing is asking for big bucks: For a weekend in March, the property rents for $850 a night plus fees. A weekend in April is $477 a night.
Dome home
The largest dome has a kitchen, living area, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms.
Bianco says the smaller domes are more like sleeping quarters, as long as you’re not claustrophobic.
“You can actually open those little doors that kind of look like something out of ‘Lord of the Rings.’ … You open those and you crawl into that, and that’s like the sleeping space.”

The studio dome is a bit larger with a queen-sized bed and skylights.
The smaller domes share a communal bathroom.
“It has a bathtub and shower in there with skylights, so you can take a bath or shower and look up at the stars,” Bianco says.

The property comes with a meditation temple the owner imported, a fire pit area, and a pool and spa.
“The pool area is really amazing. I mean, it’s just something that stands out. You wouldn’t expect that being in the middle of this Joshua Tree desert area,” Bianco says. “It’s really beautiful, and the grounds are kept up meticulously and are in great condition.
“I think this is probably going to be sold to an investor looking for a unique opportunity such as this and somebody that wants to utilize it for an event space, weddings, photography sessions, Airbnb, that kind of thing,” he continues
Bianco says even though it stands out, it kind of fits into the quirkiness of the area.
“In Joshua Tree in general, there’s a lot of different properties out there. In general, it’s very hippie-ish and fun.”
