Did the Property Brothers Just Meet a Celeb Who Knows More About Home Design Than Them?

HGTV

It’s not often that property brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott meet someone as passionate about home design as them, but they seem fairly impressed by Drew Barrymore on the latest “Celebrity IOU.”

In the episode “Drew Barrymore’s Renovation Surprise,” the brothers agree to help Barrymore do an indoor-outdoor remodel of the kitchen, dining area, and deck for Barrymore’s best friend and makeup artist, Deb. The two single moms have been working together and supporting each other for 20 years.

Jonathan and Drew have five weeks to remodel Deb’s South Pasadena, CA, home, and Barrymore will take time out of her busy talk-show schedule to help. Plus, given Barrymore redecorated her own house and has her own furniture line, the Scott brothers say she might be one of the most well-versed people they’ve ever worked with.

Behold the combined design power of Barrymore with the brothers, plus the many lessons they pass along that might work wonders around your own abode, too.

Go all the way with floors

“Deb’s floors are in very rough shape, and even though our focus is reimagining the kitchen and dining area, we’re changing the floors throughout the home for a seamless look,” says Jonathan.

“Deb already has a beautiful home, but all that natural light that already flows in is a part of what makes it so special,” says Drew. “So we’re adding hardwood to not only enhance that light, but also help brighten and unify the space even more.”

“It connects the entire main floor,” adds Jonathan.

A herringbone pattern is worth the effort

While laying out the beautiful flooring, Jonathan says, “We decided to go with a beautiful herringbone pattern to add comfortable sophistication, a vibe Drew really wants for Deb. It is more work, but at the end of the day, so worthwhile.”

“Just because Deb likes modern doesn’t mean you can’t have a classic pattern like herringbone,” Drew adds. “This actually elevates the look of the space.”

Once the work is done, Jonathan is pleased by the results.

“I like it because you don’t have a huge space, so what can you do to make it look more interesting? Boom!” he says.

The herringbone pattern of the floor elevates the space.

Wood grains can play tricks on the eye

Drew Barrymore explains away the moire.

As Barrymore and Jonathan select finishes and surfaces, he holds up a darker cabinet door sample with a heavy and defined woodgrain.

“I’m looking here and my immediate thought is this woodgrain in a panel this size is fine,” says Barrymore. “Any bigger, it’s going to start to moire the eyes. It’s too much.”

A definition pops up on-screen: “‘Moire’ is when tight parallel lines intersect, causing an optical effect that makes it difficult for the eye to focus.”

Jonathan is blown away by Barrymore’s design knowledge and vocabulary.

Deck material has changed for the better

“These high-end composite boards will give Deb a zero-maintenance outdoor oasis,” says Drew.

“It’s crazy, because back when we started doing decks, our very first deck was all wood that you had to reseal constantly, you had to worry about fading, warping,” adds Jonathan. “But now, Deb will never have to refinish, sand down, restain, reseal. I like that it has a texture, so it prevents slipping as well.”

Recessed lighting can brighten a room

People don’t really pay much attention to recessed lighting, because it’s, you know, recessed.

But Jonathan and Drew certainly know its value and discuss it as they insert the lights into the ceiling.

Drew points out that there will be light streaming in from windows on one side, from a glass door on the other. But in between, recessed lights will provide all the brightness they need.

“As these are LED lights, they cost less to operate, we get the widest spread of ambient light, and they run less hot, so I think all around, it’s a good solution,” says Jonathan.

“Everything is going to be bright and beautiful. It’s just going to make a world of difference,” says Drew.

Do Drew Barrymore and the property brothers deliver?

According to Deb, they surely do.

“I didn’t expect any of this, but this is above and beyond anything. It’s just such a lovely enhancement to our lives,” she says upon seeing their handiwork. “I almost don’t feel worthy of it, because it is so beautiful and it’s so extravagant. I’m so grateful.”

The property brothers part ways with Barrymore knowing they have a new design pro they can turn to if the need strikes.
