Christina Hall Is Back—With a New Husband, Home, and Season of ‘Christina on the Coast’

Christina Hall is thrilled to be renovating a kitchen again.

Christina Hall has changed—a lot—since many of us last saw her on TV.

For one, she’s changed her last name from Haack to Hall so she can better match up with her new husband, Josh Hall. She’s also changed her town of residence from Newport to Dana Point, CA.

Yet amid all of these changes, this ever-evolving designer has managed to stick with her show “Christina on the Coast,” which has just premiered Season 5.

In the first episode, aptly titled “A New Outlook,” she shows off her new house and latest ideas for home design. And while everything looks amazing, there does appear to be one glaring flaw within Christina’s own home. Take a look at what that is, as well as the many very good ideas that you may want to borrow for your own place.

A soft sofa can be a tough place to sit

The season premiere offers a good look at Christina’s new home, and while it’s naturally gorgeous, not everyone is a fan of all the features.

Case in point: As Christina’s design manager James comes over to chat, he plops down on her living room couch, and sinks in. Then he starts squirming for a comfortable position.

“Oh, my God,” he exclaims. “How am I supposed to have a conversation on this?”

“What are you doing?” Christina asks as he wiggles around, trying to find the right position.

“I’m just trying to get comfortable,” he tells her.

“Just sit up straight,” suggests Christina.

“I am, but it’s just cushions, and you can’t sit on the end because you sink,” he explains.

Clearly, Christina’s tastes in seating can’t please everybody.

Use the island for a pop of color

After their overly cushy design powwow is done, Christina and James conduct a client call at the home of Angela and John, who’ve hired them to make over their kitchen, dining, and living areas for $150,000.

In the kitchen, Christina learns that John is not wild about incorporating Angela’s favorite color green into the design. He is OK with a pop or two, he says, but “a little green goes a long way.”

Christina comes up with a compromise: “What we’re thinking is doing the white Shaker [on the cabinets] along the entire perimeter, and then doing this really cool, very unique sage-green island.”

John isn’t exactly thrilled with the idea but is OK with it because it’s just on the island—especially when he sees how great it looks when it’s complete.

Make sure stair railings match the rest of the house

Christina says the current spindles are overly ornate and don’t go with the newer design style.

But Angela is attached to the concept of wrought iron with a wood railing.

“They’re not horrible. They just don’t super go with this,” Christina says, gesturing to the updated finishes they’ve picked.

After much discussion, they decide to get rid of the older, dated railing and create a whole new one out of wire cable and wood posts. It matches the rest of the decor and really opens up the space.

Rattan is back!

“Do you know what rattan is?” Christina asks the couple as they discuss the lighting above the island.

“Yes,” says John. “I’m from the ’70s!”

“Think ’70s, but now it’s, like, kind of boho organic,” explains Christina. “So I think it would be really cool to do two large tan pendants over this massive island. They’re going to be that lighter color like the floor, and it’s going to make it bold. You’re going to see it when you first walk in. It goes with the whole wood theme as well. I think it’s going to tie everything together.”

Christina places light basket-weave accessories all over the house. And wouldn’t you know, they really work!

Open shelves work above a bar

In the dining area, Angela loves the idea of adding a wet bar and suggests doing the bottom cabinets green and the upper cabinets white.

But Christina has a better idea.

“It may look too enclosed if you do upper cabinets,” she says. “Because we’re bar people, and we do a lot of bars. What we’ve seen that looks really nice is if you do, like, the beverage fridge in the lower cabinets, then you do all floating shelves above. It’s really nice having this all open.”

In the end, the couple are amazed and thrilled with the final outcome.

“It’s light and airy, and it’s just perfect,” says Angela.

“This is the home where you can create brand-new memories,” Christina confirms. “All good ones.”
