A harmonious home built for musicians is on the market in Oberlin, OH. You can scoop it up for $1 million.
The spectacular style of the two-bedroom dwelling was the talk of the town when it was custom-built in 2004 for a married musician couple.
The eye-popping property has again created a buzz now that it has come up for sale.
Highlights include a magnificent open performance area, custom cabinetry from Ferrari, and the natural surroundings.

One-of-a-kind design
“People call it modern, but I think it’s more a contemporary style with its open spaces, large expanses of windows, and unconventional volumes of space,” says listing agent Pradnya Martz, of Keller Williams.
“The owners were professional musicians. She just retired from teaching the cello, and her late husband was a principal oboist at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. They used to entertain here and hold small concerts on the first level. There are beautiful acoustics in the house, so, of course, the home has already attracted many musicians and artists.”
Located just a few doors down from the Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Weltzheimer Johnson House, the 6,873-square-foot home has an unusual floorplan as well.

The foyer opens to a spectacular, two-story performance and entertainment space with bamboo flooring, a soaring ceiling, and excellent acoustics, where the couple hosted intimate concerts and gatherings.
“The home truly excites the mind while providing a peaceful space to live,” Martz says.
Plus, the home is entirely accessible and easy to navigate.
“The primary suite and kitchen are located on the second floor, and there is an elevator with access to the main level. The elevator goes to the garage, so you can easily unload groceries. Everything in the kitchen is built-in. From the kitchen, it opens up to the living room, so you can see the entire front area.”

The study was designed with no windows by the current owners, who were seeking “focused work” without distractions. Upstairs, the dining room overlooks the foyer, while a nearby primary suite offers custom-designed glass features.
Natural surroundings
The contemporary architecture seems to incorporate the surrounding natural environment.
“The couple created a ‘managed forest’ with pine trees designed to resemble bonsai,” Martz adds. “There are also small gardens on the 2-acre lot that include a Japanese bamboo garden.

Martz says there has been varied interest in the property.
“I had a person call me who was moving from California to the Cleveland area, and they were specifically looking for a modern home,” she says. “It’s located not far from the airport, and Cleveland is just 45 minutes away.”
Martz believes the home is suitable for many different age ranges.
“The prospective buyers have been from all walks of life who come in and are excited by the space of the home,” she says. “Alumni of Oberlin College love its proximity to the school. Others are looking to live in a college town, while musicians and artists are looking for a home to showcase their talent in a space with an abundance of natural light. It’s also a beautiful home for someone who just works from home.”
Martz adds, “The house took 18 months to build. I think the real appeal is that there are very few homes in this area that offer a design quite like this.”
