Inside a Breathtaking Modern Home Positioned on the Edge of a Canyon (House Tour)

By Michael Madsen in General 6th Oct, 2023 Video Duration: 00:05:24
On the hills of Pacific Palisades, in Los Angeles, is Palisades Residence by Abramson Architects, a breathtaking modern home with sweeping views of the canyon backdrop. As the house tour begins from street level, the house opens onto a one-storey main level before descending to the second floor. Journeying further, the main level opens to reveal the living space with dropped ceilings that at first obscure the top of the canyon. However, as the house tour moves further into the living area, the interior design opens up with the ceiling, lifting to gift the occupants breathtaking views of the canyon.

From the entry way, the architects have designed a tall space with concrete walls and split skylights, which have been designed specifically to allow light to reflect and bounce into the breathtaking modern home. The upper level contains the primary suite, which has its own his and hers bathrooms and dressing rooms. Additionally, this level contains the kitchen, dining room, living room and the covered outdoor space that leads to the outdoor entertaining areas. From here, the house tour leads down to the second level where additional living spaces are placed – these three secondary suites complement the interior design of the breathtaking modern home. One of the more special moments of the home’s architecture is the exterior staircase that leads to the guesthouse below, allowing guests private access without having to go through the main house.

Positioned on a steep hillside, the architects were forced to integrate the house into the slopped landscape and its typography. However, the team did not want to hide the breathtaking modern home so instead created intimate moments with the architecture and interior design throughout the house where the owners could feel in touch with the land. Additionally, due to the home’s location and its high-risk fire location, the materials over the exterior of the architecture are non-combustible. Including concrete and metals, the architects also employ timber with a fire protection board layered behind the wood veneer. Another design method used to combat the winds that come up through the canyon at certain times of the day is a series of custom designed aluminium windscreens that be freely moved. With each material selection complementing the other, the breathtaking modern home responds to the environment and offers the owners a house they can enjoy for many years.
